Full Form of SMART
Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology
SMART Full Form is Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology. SMART is a diagnostic method that detects faults as well as monitors and maintains the technology. It aims at reducing hard drive failures by reporting and notifying the faults and errors in advance. SMART method was launched by IBM in the year 1992 for its disk array so as to predict and identify disk errors. SMART is located between the input-output systems and helps to find out faults in drive due to mechanical issues such as wear & tear on the drive or age of the system. SMART can detect faults by finding out issues on the drive’s physical surface like the driver head and other parts that caused the damage.
According to the level of damage, SMART helps to predict drive’s lifespan, which enables a user to backup, store data or replace the drive timely. However, SMART is unable to detect some unpredictable or uncommon failures like failures due to damage of an Electrical component or any type of physical manhandling. SMART plays a major role in preventing any sort of data loss by notifying the user timely about disk failure.
SMART can predict upcoming issues in a hard drive but there are several mechanical issues that SMART cannot detect or predict in advance. Some of the major hard drive manufacturers that include the S.M.A.R.T Technology in their hard drives are IBM, Maxtor, Seagate, Quantum, Fujitsu and Western Digital. Modern SMART technology is a step ahead it not only predicts system failure and errors it also attempts to repair some selected errors.
