Pocket Internet Groper

PING Full Form is Pocket Internet Groper. PING is a computer program or software which is used for getting connectivity of network between 2 systems. These systems can vary from a huge server to a router to a personal computer or a gateway. In order to test the connectivity, series of packets are passed through a network from one system to the second one. The system on the other side acknowledges it by replied. This acknowledgement helps the sender system to understand that connection has been established between the systems.

PING is basically a software utility that is utilized for the purposes of testing the reachability of a host over an Internet Protocol (abbreviated as IP) network. This utility evaluates the round-trip time of those messages that are sent from the source host to a target computer which is sent back to the source. The name PING is derived from an active solar terminology which transmits a pulse of sound and receives an echo for the detection of objects under water. PING is actually a backronym. The operation of PING is done by transmitting Internet Control Message Protocol (abbreviated as ICMP) Echo request packets. These packets are sent to the destination host and the PING then waits for an ICMP Echo reply.

This program reports packet loss, errors, a statistical summary of all the results, generally covering maximum, minimum, and standard deviation of the mean. There are variations in the command-line options and the output of the PING utility among various implementations. Options often include the count of tests, size of the payload, limits for the TTL, etc. Many systems have come up with a provision of a companion utility called ping6, for the purposes of testing on IPV6 networks.

PING can also refer to the push mechanism used in blogging. Here, PING is the mechanism based on XML-RPC. This helps the weblog to notify the server regarding the contents being updated. A ping server might notify various services when pinged. The list of services includes; web directories, aggregators, feed websites, search engines, and others.
