Vocational training is important in today’s world. All those who cannot take higher education but have the will to work and survive can opt for a vocational course as there are many opportunities present. As development in the country grows, there are more industries set up to meet the demands of the times and this is a golden platform for all those who seek employment.

What is ITI or Industrial Training Institute?

In order to facilitate employment for all, Government opened institutes to train people in various vocational fields after completing class 10. These are the ITIs or Industrial Training Institutes. As the name suggests, students are given training in different industrial skills and the student has the choice to select the field he / she plans to master.

There are categories like electrician, mechanical maintenance, refrigeration and air-conditioning mechanic, computer hardware technician and much more. The aim of ITI is to prepare the technical workforce for the industries. The candidate is imparted with basic knowledge and skills to handle a job of an operator or a technician in the specified trade. The course is anywhere from one year to three years, depending on the trade field that is chosen.

The National Council for Vocational Training (NCVT) conducts a test at the end of the course known as the All India Trade Test (AITT) and successful candidates are awarded a certificate known as National Trade Certificate (NTC). The candidates have a further option of going for industrial training for 1or 2 years in this opted trade. However, for this too, he has to appear for a test to obtain the National Apprenticeship Certificate issued by NCVT.

What is the advantage of course in ITI?

It is not possible for all to enroll for costly degree education in engineering or other similar fields. Yet there are many job opportunities that are open in various industries. With growing business to meet demands of the market, there are many industries that work extra shifts to fulfill the order requirements. Hence, there is a necessity of personnel to handle the workload. This is a perfect time for person’s with the skill to perform those tasks to secure a job.

Since Industrial Training Institute is a Government run center, the knowledge imparted there is in tune with the different trade requirements. Besides, the certificate offered by the institute is valid in all the industries and it proves that the candidate has successfully acquired the skills needed for the job. The person who gets the certificate from ITI can further pursue specialization in the chosen trade from Advanced Training Institute (ATI). This will help in getting a better leverage while applying for a job.

All the students who complete degrees in engineering have more theoretical experience than practical. Their practical knowledge is mostly limited to the lab work and the internship that they take up during the course. On the other hand, the course at ITI is purely practical based and the candidates get hands-on experience in tackling various trade issues.

Conditions for setting up ITI

Industrial Training Institutes cannot be set up at any random places as the educationists deem necessary. There are certain conditions laid to start the institute by the Government. Since these are government run institutes, the guidelines have to be strictly adhered to.

The State or Union Territory Government has to keep these things in mind:

• The institutes need to be located in the vicinity of any of the trades like Automobile industry, electrical or electronics industries, Information Technology (IT), chemical industry or some fabrication units. This is in view of the need to send the students for industrial training.
• The institutes should be provided with financial, administrative, academic and management support to function flawlessly to emerge as Centers of Excellence.
• The selected institute should have Institute Management Committee that has a capability of establishing public-private ties to help implement the mission of trade training.
• The institutes should have good surrounding with ample scope for expansion, alterations in the existing constructed building. There should be good infrastructure and open area for landscaping. The location of the institute should be easily accessible by road or rail.
• The States desirous of setting up ITIs should sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Central Government to facilitate the release of funds for the institute.

Career options after completion of ITI course

There are Government funded as well as private funded ITIs in India. However, in 2003 during a study conducted by International Labour Organization, it came to light that the graduates passing out from the Industrial Training Institute were mainly from the stream of trade that had shown a decline in growth. Hence, the skill and knowledge were wasted. So before deciding to do a course in ITI, it is wise to select a trade that has potential in the current market.

Remember, if you choose the right stream of trade then there is no dearth of jobs outside or the potential to set up your own profitable unit. For example, with so many vehicles on the road and the need for their maintenance, if you select an automobile related course like that of an auto mechanic, etc then you can very well open your own garage (for which you get funding from banks) or work in any established auto service center.

Similarly, electrician, computer hardware or electronics technician, welder, turner / fitter, plumber, air-conditioning & refrigeration serviceman etc have ample scope of survival through constant work feed. Students in the electrical field who wish to pursue further education can do so after ITI course and join diploma in electrical engineering that can further enhance their knowledge about the field. This also gives them an opportunity to secure job in any top company as an electrical maintenance engineer.

Future for ITI candidates

ITI graduates can seek government jobs too, besides applying in the private or public sector. The armed forces, as well as government organizations like railway, BSF and CRPF, have opportunities for ITI trained persons. With industrial growth and a shortage of manpower, there is constant need skilled labor. Thus, institutes like Industrial Training Institute do a lot of good by grooming skilled craftsman in various trade fields.

Apart from giving them job opportunities in the outside world, these trade-based courses empower the person to stand on his own by starting small business or workshop. The government gives ample facilities to persons who wish to start their own manufacturing small scale units. Thus, a small fabrication unit or service center is a good option. Auto and diesel mechanics can open their own garage or seek employment in auto industry or service stations.

Certified technicians or electricians have got good growth in the booming real estate industry. With so much construction work in progress all over the country, there is always a need for licensed plumbers, electricians, etc. Besides local market, ITI trained technicians to have job opportunities in the money making a land of Middle East, especially turners/ fitters. Welders, etc. Choosing right field for studies is important for future growth and security.
