Google Mail

GMAIL Full Form is Google Mail. GMAIL is a free for all, advertising-facilitated email service that is provided by Google. Users can access Gmail in the form of secure webmail as well as by means of IMAP4 or POP3 protocols. It started in the form of an invitation-only service on 1 April 2004 and was made available to the public on 7 February 2007 but in the original beta status during that time. The mail service was eventually upgraded from its beta status on 7 July 2009, along with other Google Applications. Gmail initially supported storage capacity up to 1 GB per user but went on to substantially incre ase the storage amount to tackle competitive pressure from the then well-established mail services such as Hotmail and Yahoo!.

Gmail comes with a search-oriented interface as well as a conversation view which is akin to an Internet forum. It has pioneered the use of Ajax. It operates on Google GFE/2.0 on the Linux platform. As of the year 2016, it has become the most commonly used electronic mail service in the world, with around 1 billion users active. As per the year 2014, 60 percent of the moderately sized American companies were using this mail service. In the year 2014, Gmail became the only app on the app platform, Google Play store to have one billion downloads on Android devices. Interestingly, Gmail is part of the worldwide campaign against child pornography. It fights child pornography with the use of Gmail’s servers in coordination with the National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children (abbreviated as NCMEC) to search children experiencing abuse across the world.

In this collaboration, it tries to make a database of child pornography images and each image is accorded a unique numerical number termed as hash. Google then undertakes scanning of these unique hashes and detects the use of child pornography. Gmail works on almost every browser. The modern-day AJAX version supports all major web browsers in the market such as Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, Safari, and Internet Explorer. It also provides support for Android and iOS devices. In order to access Gmail on mobiles, the mobile browser has to be XHTML compliant and have a URL length of about 2000 bytes. The network should also facilitate cookies and securitisation of SSL traffic. The mobile application of Gmail is presently most popular application in the world owing to its compatibility and innovative features.
