A significant piece of news is emerging from the capital, Delhi. It has been reported that former RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das has been entrusted with a major responsibility. He will now serve as the Principal Secretary to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Shaktikanta Das previously served as the RBI Governor for six years. Currently, Pramod Kumar Mishra (PK Mishra) has been the Prime Minister’s Principal Secretary since September 11, 2019. Shaktikanta Das is a retired Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer from the 1980 batch.
Shaktikanta Das held the position of RBI chief from December 2018 for six years. Additionally, he has worked in various domains under both central and state governments, including finance, taxation, industry, and infrastructure. He has also served as a member of the 15th Finance Commission and as India’s G20 Sherpa. He will now work alongside PK Mishra, who was reappointed to this position in June 2024.

Dr. PK Mishra, a 1972-batch officer, previously retired as the Agriculture Secretary of the Government of India and has been working closely with PM Modi for the past ten years. Between 2014 and 2019, he also served as Modi’s Additional Principal Secretary. With over 38 years of experience in governance, during his tenure in the Finance Ministry, he played a direct role in the preparation of eight Union Budgets.
He has represented India on major international platforms such as the IMF, G20, BRICS, and SAARC. Shaktikanta Das’s appointment comes at a time when PM Modi and the central government are focusing on strengthening their economic policies and financial administration. Given Shaktikanta Das’s past contributions, it can be said that his collaboration with PM Modi is likely to bolster the country’s progress. There is greater potential for advancement in the economic sector, as well as accelerated development in finance, taxation, industry, and infrastructure.
